The annual Toy Run is a mass ride.

The object being that each participant donates a toy to make Christmas a little brighter for underprivileged children of all races in orphanages, homes and hospitals in our communities.

It has become an institution in South Africa, and even in other parts of the world. It is the largest Motorcycle charity event in the world, and it is for a great cause. The children of South Africa are often on the losing end of the stick and either do not have homes of their own or are abandoned by the very people that are meant to look after them.

The objectives of the Toy Run is to improve and enhance the image of motorcyclists in their communities. To collect and distribute toys and gifts to less privileged children up to 18 years over the Christmas period.

In Cape Town there is various places that the bikers can meet and let me tell you every guy or gal that has a bike, whether road worthy or not, bring there bikes out for the day. Needless to say, “entry” means bringing a toy along.

Some guys pitch up on MX bikes, others on scooters, some on quads and then some on “golden oldies”, but for the rest, they bring their latest scoots.

We normally meet at Canal Walk and we try to get there early. As always it is a great time to meet up with friends and have a good chat about whatever happens to come up. If memory serves me the bikes then depart at 10h00 am in a huge procession from the parking lot, through to Maynardville. It is an awesome sight to behold.

Johannesburg must have +- 20 000 bikes that go on the run, so you can imagine how long the traffic has got to wait patiently for us nice people to pass through.

I just have a few pics, so that you can get an idea of what happens at the annual event. The charity event tries to get as many people to bring donations in the form of educational toys, books, teddy bears, dolls etc. It then gets distributed to the various charities within days of the event.

Maynardville gets really busy with live bands, beer tents lots of chat and just a generally great time. You get to meet up with your mates and just have a blast. If you ever want to experience something so different, then make a plan to go on the next Toy Run. It is for a great cause and it is just heaps of fun.

Last year it took place on Sunday 25th November 2007 in Cape Town.

This year it was on Sunday 30 November 2008.
