Hout Bay to Blouberg

Hout Bay to Blouberg via Constantia and Kirstenbosch Gardens

Hout Bay is a very beautiful town that is known for its fishing. The local harbour is filled with fishing trawlers and recreational boats that take visitors on a tour of the coast line. Arguably one of the best places to go for our local 'fish and chips'. It is always a treat.

Hout Bay has many little coffee shops and we normally gather at a central place, have a cup of coffee and then we head on out. It is a slow ride from here toward Constantia with fairly heavy traffic - but that will depend on the the time of day.

In the photo, above, we are looking back towards Hout Bay on the way to Constantia neck road...

As we near Constantia the traffic becomes less. Just before entering the town of Constantia, you turn left into one of the most awesome stretches of road you will ever encounter. It is +- 5 to 8km long with loads of twists and turns. Most of the corners are rather tight so make sure you don't enter the corner too hot. You may just not make the turn. Be warned.

The road travels all along Table Mountain, which is lined with trees, so from a natural beauty you cannot ask for more. The actual road surface has to rate as one of the best I have ridden on. It is so smooth with hardly a bump in the road. This is great when cornering as you can trust the fact that your bike will not be twitching or jumping around when cornering. So you can feel rest assured to open the throttle and your back wheel will hold its line.

Be careful, you must focus, because the twists are plentiful and any lack in concentration through this section could have dire consequences. As you near the end of this stretch of road, you approach Kirstenbosch Gardens which is a landmark in Cape Town. It is our local botanical gardens that also holds live concerts and is generally frequented by people looking to spend some time in nature and possibly having a nice picnic for the day. The kids are also in a safe environment so they can run around andjust have plenty of fun. It has to rate as one of the most awesome places to visit in the Western Cape. But, for us bikers it is not always the most ideal place to stop being in leathers of course. Have you ever heard of a biker racing along with a picnic basket strapped to his back? I thought not.

As you leave the Kirstenbosch area you approach the M3 freeway that in its own right has very nice corners. Certainly faster than the previous ones we tackled so you can definitely give her some more horns as you go through the corners. As you approach the University there is an awesome chicane with an awesome right turn followed by an even better left turn.

I have no doubt that this ride will become one of your favourite rides for the scenery the Western Cape has to offer, or for the enjoyment of the road.

I hope you enjoyed this route.

Regards, Wayne.
