Helshoogte Pass

Possibly the most awesome mountain pass in the world... Helshoogte Pass, between Cape Town and Franschoek, South Africa.

Just recently my friends and I headed for the pass on route to Franschoek for breakfast. Every time I go on it I am struck by its beauty and riding pleasure. There are many bikers that ride this pass and just go up and down as many times as they can manage - just for fun. Just recently the road has been resurfaced which was needed because it was starting to wear in places you did not want it to. This would throw you off your line and certainly hamper corner speed.

And let me tell you since the resurfacing it has to been one of the nicest places just outside of Cape Town where the boys go to play. The corners range from as slow as 80 km/h to possibly a little over 150 km/h and you have two lanes to play with so you can really hang off the bike and give her horns.
Among the mates we have one rule. No overtaking on the inside, but you are more than welcome to overtake on the outside. The reason is that most of us don’t race - aside for Roberto and Michael - so we don’t want anyone to get a fright or that we possibly have an accident on our hands. As you get to the top of Helshoogte Pass the lads stop for a smoke break and a wee break if necessary and to just have a good chat with your mates. But other than that as you get to the top, you turn around and twist the throttle wide open and give her a go all the way back down again. And so it goes. When you get to the bottom you head straight back up again...
On my old bike I took one of the corners so fast that my mate behind me could see sparks fly from the foot peg and that was with my wife Chavonne on the back.!!!! So yes, I enjoy the pass. The setting is wonderful as you have wine farms all around you while riding through mountain ranges on either side.

Enjoy the trip and "ride safe".
