Garden Route via the N2

Over Sir Lowrys Pass on through Caledon then Swellendam, Mossel Bay, through picturesque Knysna, ending in Plettenberg Bay.

As you leave Cape Town to head north, you have two choices. The N1 freeway or the N2. For this route we are taking the N2. Heading from Cape Town, you can stop at the Somerset West Shell Ultra to fill up. Most of the bikers fill their motorcycles at this stop.

After you have filled up you head on to Sir Lowrys pass, which has some awesome bends. Keep your head down and keep the accelerator open and enjoy the ride. Be careful of trucks as they frequent this pass en route to the coastal towns along the East Coast.

As you reach the top of the pass and look to your right, you look down at Gordons Bay, which is a smallish town. The blue water and clear skies, make you realise that you are not going to see the coast line until you reach Mossel Bay, some 300 kms away.

Going down the pass you head toward Grabouw. Just keep following the road. If you are really hungry at this point, even though only 70 kms out of Cape Town, feel free to stop at either Hou Hoek hotel, which is on your left hand side or the Houk Hoek Inn on the right hand side. The breakfast (brekkie) is great at either.

All the way through to Plettenberg Bay you pass the most awesome places. Just after Hou Hoek, you go through a little mountain pass with great sweeps and bends and on the end of the pass you can turn off to Hermanus. Here I took a few photos of the superb coastline complete with restaurants. This spot, in fact anywhere along this stretch of coast, is reputed to be the place to view the whales during their season in our waters. The entire village dedicates two weeks per year for the annual whale watching festival. But, on this trip, we were not there in whale season.

En route you pass turn offs like Villiersdorp, Greyton, Caledon, which are all such awesome bike trips on their own. But slow down, we are not going to these places. Onward toward Plett (Plettenberg Bay).
The road tends to go down-hill and up-hill and twists and turns, so trust me there is no time for you to doze off on this route. It really is so beautiful and most of the way it goes through farm lands with cows, sheep, ostriches etc.

I normally stop at Riviersonderend for a light lunch and this day was no different. As I was about to leave - a chap on a KTM Adventurer was travelling through, so I took a photo of him.

Oops!! Oh dear.! He was so fast, I almost missed him on camera. He is there - barely visible just off centre of the photo.

The rest of the trip through to Mossel Bay is pretty straight with the twists and turns definitely becoming less. But nevertheless it is still awesome. Just outside of Mossel Bay (+- 50kms) you will find the Gouritz River Bridge.

You cross over the bridge while travelling through to Mossel Bay. Chavonne and I were on honeymoon and we decided to stop. Chavonne was so keen to go and bungi jump, but I must be honest, I wimped out. She was on her own. Bikers are meant to be tough buggers. I can do it all, but to jump off a bridge – well, no I can’t. Chavonne, I am proud of you.

Once you reach Mossel Bay, you can either head off to the town. I have some great pics of the last time I was in Mossel with my mates .

We had such a great time at the Buffalo Rally, watching okes having a few drinks, popping wheelies up and down the street, doing burnouts and just having an overall good time.

Once you leave Mossel Bay you travel along the coast line for a while and then you travel through an awesome pass that is only about 3 kms long, but the turns are seriously high speed. You will love it.!

I never really stop in George, so let’s continue to head on toward Plett. The next really beautiful town you travel through is Wilderness. Unfortunately I took no pics of Wilderness. It is really just another breathtaking town on the Garden Route.

You then pass through Sedgefield on route to Knysna. Just before approaching Knysna you have another little pass with some awesome sweeps of which some are rather tight.

You have little time to stare at the scenery, which has to rate amongst the best you will ever see. Once you approach Knysna you best slow down and again just soak up the natural beauty. If you go through the town you can go on to Knysna Waterfront for bite a to eat, or possibly even through to Knysna Heads to go and enjoy the beauty. Or you can just hover around to stay and enjoy the sunset.

From Knysna it is a short and pretty straight ride through to Plett. Not many turns to come.

Then... ta da!! you're in Plettenberg Bay.

It deserves a page of its own.

See you again.
