Blouberg to Hout Bay
Blouberg (West Coast) to Hout Bay via Sea Point, Clifton, Camps Bay and Llandudno.
Some Sunday mornings you feel like a quick squirt in and around the Cape, without being away from home for too long. Well if that is the case and you feel like throwing your bike around, around some of the most awesome road surfaces that twist along the coast line, well then you will love this Blouberg to Hout Bay route.
When you leave the West Coast at Blouberg and travelling along the ocean, it is pretty uneventful as the road is really dead straight with the occasional little twist (very occasional). You head on past town and the V&A Waterfront and on toward Seapoint. Seapoint has plenty of upmarket apartments on the waterfront with lots of restaurants and of course the infamous promenade where people walk and run and play with their kids. Just a really wonderful neighbourhood to be travelling through. You can stop here just to take the fresh air and the scene in, if you like.
As you leave Seapoint you enter Bantry Bay and from their you head on toward Clifton. All I can say to you, is that this part of the coast line has probably the most wealth in and around Cape Town. The cars are only the best and the homes are worth more than most mortals could ever raise in their lifetimes. So yes, it is awesome and all this way you have homes on your left in the mountain face and on the right you have homes on the cliffs taking you down to the ocean. The first leg of the journey is purely about the scenery so you won't be burning up the rubber quite at this time.
Once you pass Clifton and head on though Camps Bay you have the opportunity to stop at one of a few side walk café with the beach front on your right hand side. Again I never stop here. I prefer to ride through to my destination and stop there for something to eat and drink. As you exit Camps Bay the twists start and let me tell you this is some of the most awesome twisties you will encounter. +- 5kms only, but worth every minute. Sometimes for fun the guys go back and forth on this part of the road. It really is awesome. It swings left and right and on the whole the surface is very smooth so you know you can put the power down and really enjoy the corner speed in safety. The scenery is great, but as life would have it you don't get too much time to actually see the scenery. Especially on this stretch of road.
At the end of it all, you bypass Llandudno where you will find some of the most expensive homes in the Western Cape, with most of the homes suspended in the mountain overlooking the ocean.
All you have now is a final downhill that takes you into Hout Bay. Hout Bay is a wonderful seaside town with plenty of restaurants to visit. I normally stop at the local Wimpy for a breakfast but there are many more where you can stop for something to eat or drink.
Happy riding!
